Alvan "Dobbie" Dobson, Jr. age 87 of Claymont, DE passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.

A native Delawarean, Dobbie was born on July 12, 1929, some say with a rubber coat, hip boots and helmet on into a family of firefighters. He began his volunteer firefighting at a young age with Five Points Fire Company and served at Claymont Fire Company for over 60 years, where he was a life active member. Dobbie held all of the fire-line offices, which included captain, assistant chief, deputy chief, fire chief and fire police. He was a member of the Board of Directors for over 10 years, where he served as both vice-president and chairman. He was also a member of the Delaware State Fire Chiefs Association and the American Legion.

After graduating from Conrad High School in 1947, Dobbie joined the Air National Guard, where he served as a parachute rigger and was activated during the Korean War. After the war, he married Barbara Walmsley in 1951, where the two settled in Claymont, DE to raise their two children.

The House of Representatives of the 143rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware and Senate commemorated May 19th as Alvan "Dobbie" Dobson Day for his years of fire service. Dobbie was also awarded Chief Emeritus in 2015.

Dobbie made his career as a chemical operator at Wilmington Chemical and Honeywell (Allied Chemical). He enjoyed fishing, The Phillies, U of D football, coaching little league and spending time with his family.

Alvan "Dobbie" was a son of the late Alvan F. Dobson, Sr. and Helen (Maxwell) Dobson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Dobson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara A. (Walmsley) Dobson; sister, Carol Snavely (Warren); children, Judy Wilson-Donnelly and Ron Dobson; grandchildren, Christine (William Jr.), Bill (Christina) and Sean; 5 great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Dobson.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday evening, September 20, 2016 at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703. Additional visitation will be held Wednesday morning, September 21 at the funeral home beginning at 10am, where a Funeral Service will follow at 11am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dobbie's memory may be made to the Claymont Fire Company, 3223 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.
