Love Emblem

Irene C. Kominek, 95, of Wilmington (previously of Bergenfield, NJ), passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Foulk Manor North.

Irene was born in 1921 to the late Charles and Angela (Kuhn) Merkler. She attended St. Mary's High School in Elizabeth, NJ, and Montclair State College in Montclair, NJ. She later earned a Master's degree in Library Science from Columbia University. She started her career as a teacher, but her love of books led her to become a librarian. She worked for many years as the librarian of North Bergen High School, where she was greatly appreciated by her students.

Irene had a passion for life. She loved people, travel, and participating in all kinds of activities. For much of her life, her weekly schedule included swimming, singing, and dancing, and of these, travel and singing remained with her long into her retirement years. She traveled all over the world during her lifetime, and when she could no longer travel herself, she continued to read about travel whenever she had the chance. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines, along with other community choruses in Bergen County. At Foulk Manor North she continued to sing with conviction at religious services and in group singing events until a month before her death.

In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband Frank, her sister Doris Reding, and her nephew James Reding. She is survived by her son Charles (Sandra), and her nieces Elaine Reding and Carolyn Fuhrman (Phil).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE. The visitation hour will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the church. The Burial Service will take place at 2 PM at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, 53 Inman Ave, Colonia, NJ 07067.
