Prayer Emblem

Joan Frances Chambers, age 84, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on April 17, 2016 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Joan was a graduate of West Catholic School for Girls in Philadelphia in 1950. After being married in January 1964 to Joseph D. Chambers Sr, they moved to Claymont, Delaware and began to raise a large family. Joan spent many years being the Manager of the Chambers household, making sure Dad got off to work and the kids got off to school. Cooking, cleaning and paying the bills, Mom worked long hours every day to make sure everyone was happy.

Mom spent many, many years watching her favorite soap opera, Days of Our Lives, and more recently The Blacklist. She was a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, watching many games alongside of Dad. Mom also enjoyed her Tuesday Night Bingo at Holy Rosary Church and going on monthly trips to any casino that would take her money.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of over 49 years, Joseph D. Chambers, Sr. and her son, James Chambers. She is survived by her children, Regina Martin and her husband Michael, Joseph D. Chambers, Jr. and his wife Donna, John F. Chambers and his fiancée Sandy Gorman, Joan Stanley and her husband Ron, Michael F. Chambers, Sr. and his wife Melinda, Joanne Chambers and her fiancé Dave Ruditys, George R. Chambers, Sr. and his wife Chandlee; 2 sisters, Mary Evak (Paul) and Frances Quinn; 1 brother, Joseph Walker, Sr.; 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; and also her beloved dog, Henry.

Special thanks to the staff of Unit 4C at Christiana Hospital and to Donna and Maria at Heartland Hospice House for treating Mom like she was special.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00am on Friday morning, April 22, 2016 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703. Burial will be in Lawn Croft Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont DE 19703, on Thursday evening from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38102.
