Kenneth R. Stapleford, of Dover, DE, passed away at his home in Florida on March 11, 2017. He was 83.

Born in New Castle, DE, Ken attended the University of Rochester on an NROTC scholarship, graduating in 1956 with a degree in chemical engineering. He went on to serve as an officer in the United States Navy aboard the USS Eldorado, and was stationed at Naval Base Coronado, near San Diego. Ken later went to work for the computer company Control Data Corporation, in La Jolla. It was there that he met his wife, Linda. The couple married in 1964.

Ken's work as a computer consultant in the early days of the industry took him around the world. He and Linda lived in Puerto Rico, England, and Japan. In the early 1970s, Ken was sent by Stone & Webster Engineering to work in Beijing, China (then Peking).

Upon returning to the United States, Ken and Linda settled in Wrentham, Massachusetts. They later moved to Kitts Hummock, Delaware.

Ken loved sailing, gardening and swimming. In his retirement, he maintained an active interest in science and engineering. He presented a paper on space habitation at the Space Studies Institute, in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1997, and was working on a book, A Safe Place in Space.

Ken was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Darrah and brother, John "Buck" Stapleford. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Stapleford and a multitude of cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as by his devoted wife of 52 years, Linda.

A Graveside Service for family will be held privately at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. Dupont Parkway, in New Castle.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tidewell Hospice (tidewellhospice.org) or Suncoast Humane Society (humane.org).
